VicRoads & DoT accredited technical training programs

We have partnered with industry to deliver a range of training courses for professionals involved in the design and safe operation of the road network. 

The Department of Transport and Planning and leading industry partners ARRB, Trafficworks and Road Solutions provide technical training to industry professionals. ARRB expertise provides leading edge training, and Trafficworks and Road Solutions provides practical experience, subject matter expertise, and innovative project examples.

•	The combined team of ARRB, Trafficworks and Road Solutions provides an opportunity to continue and enhance the current technical training to industry professionals. ARRB expertise can add value with leading edge updates to the training material, whilst Trafficworks and Road Solutions can add value with practical experience, subject matter expertise, and innovative project examples.

Level 1, 2, and 3 Infrastructure Inspection Awareness (2 days) 

Gain an understanding of the types of bridge inspections (Level 1 inspections, Level 2 inspections, and Level 3 inspections) and learn about the monitor inspection process. This course will provide awareness of the Road Structures Inspection Manual, bridge components, inspections, and how the inspection information is stored and used.

Pedestrians & Cyclist - Thinking, Planning and Designing (3 days) 

This course aims to help managers, planners, practitioners, engineers and other interested professionals improve outcomes for pedestrians and cyclists. 

The main objectives of the course are to:

  • raise further awareness why walking and cycling matter
  • inform of the latest foundational policies, decision-making frameworks and methodologies
  • advise on systemic actions to further include pedestrians and cyclists in our transport system
  • raise awareness of existing resources, practical tools, and best practices
  • provide detailed advice on design practices for pedestrians and cyclists 
  • practice the provided frameworks, tools and design advice during assignments
  • identify immediate next steps for participants and any support they need.

 By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with an in-depth and intimate knowledge of best practice thinking, planning and designing for pedestrians and cyclists.

  • Participants will acquire the required capability to further include walking and cycling in their day-to-day work, and ensure pedestrians and cyclists are catered for in our transport system. 
  • Finally, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the available resources and tools to help them in their work and will meet a network of walking and cycling experts upon which they can draw in future. 

Sessions are a combination of presentations from industry experts and group workshops, including a site inspection.

  • Day 1 – Through a pedestrian lens
  • Day 2 – Planning for pedestrians and cyclists, including site visits
  • Day 3 – Design, including relevant assignments.

Planning for Pedestrians & Cyclists (2 days)

This course is designed to provide in-depth knowledge and develop skills in the application of current best practice pedestrian and cycling provision as part of the road transport system. This includes comprehensive exposure to basic engineering treatments and principles. Field work, tutorials and real-life workshop exercises form the basis of this training. By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • integrate the fundamentals of walking and cycling facilities provision into design and planning processes
  • apply appropriate traffic engineering principles to walking and cycling facilities provision and practices
  • apply and integrate knowledge of a range of design issues into the planning, design, construction
  • management and maintenance of facilities
  • demonstrate enhanced confidence in decision making processes directly related to walking and cycling facilities.

Road Safety Audit Workshop (2 days)

Attendance at this course is required to become a Department of Transport accredited Road Safety Auditor.  

Designed for professionals who have a responsibility for road safety, such as engineers, planners, designers, traffic managers, road safety practitioners, and local government engineers. This workshop is based on the Austroads National Road Safety Engineering Syllabus and assists you to: 

  • understand the road safety audit process
  • confidently engage an auditor to complete road safety audits
  • complete road safety audits under the supervision of Senior Road Safety Auditors.

Road Safety Engineering Workshop (5 days) 

Designed for professionals who have a responsibility for road safety, such as engineers, planners, designers, traffic managers, road safety practitioners, and local government engineers. This workshop is based on the Austroads National Road Safety Engineering Syllabus and assists you to:  

  • understand the role of engineering in road safety  
  • analyse crash data and undertake crash investigations  
  • develop solutions for high risk locations  
  • manage roadside hazards 
  • undertake and/or engage an auditor to complete road safety audits 
  • understand good road safety engineering practice. 

This training is made up of 2 modules: 

  1. Solutions for High Risk Locations and Roadside Hazard Management(3 days) 
  2. Road Safety Audits (2 days).

Speed Fundamentals (1 day) 

This course is designed to develop the required knowledge and skills to apply the fundamentals of speed on the road network. By completing this training, you will be able to:

  • understand the principles of speed accordance with accepted engineering standards
  • apply speed principles to road design 
  • integrate speed knowledge into the detail design and/or management of Department of Transport projects 
  • by way of both theoretical and practical tutorials, learn how to utilise operational or design speed formulas and sight distance formulas
  • understand the process for implementing or changing existing speed limits
  • understand stakeholder and community engagement practices for changing the speed limit
  • learn from previous examples and case studies.

Safe System Assessment Framework

The aim of this course is to learn about Safe System Principles and how to conduct Safe System Assessments.  This approach involves all aspects of the road system working together to help eliminate death and serious injury. Participation in this course will also contribute to the national aim of reducing deaths and injuries on Australian roads to half by 2030 and to zero by 2050.

This course is imperative for policy and decision makers, engineers, road consultants and road practitioners in order to grasp the Safe System Assessment Framework (SSAF). Participants will gain an understanding of how the road design affects different user groups including passenger cars, heavy trucks, vulnerable users and motorcycles through the SSAF. Participants will look at the role of kinetic energy, Safe System Speeds and infrastructure to apply a proactive, rather than reactive approach to safety on our road network.

Temporary Road Safety Barriers (1 day) 

Provides you with the knowledge and skills to select, oversee installation, maintain and audit Temporary Road Safety Barrier systems at roadwork sites. This training uses interactive discussion to explore real life examples. By completing this training, you will be able to:

  • explain the basic principles of Temporary Road Safety Barrier systems and suitable applications
  • identify the different types of compliant barriers and when they are typically used 
  • interpret and consider the manufacturers specifications and other requirements when selecting, designing, implementing and auditing Temporary Road Safety Barrier systems at roadwork sites
  • identify suitable inclusions of a risk assessment that accompanies the selection, design, implementation and auditing of a Temporary Road Safety Barrier system and develop practical mitigation startegies
  • minimise risk to the public and workers at roadwork sites using Temporary Road Safety Barrier systems
  • state the contractual and moral obligations.

Through a Pedestrian Lens (1 day)

This course aspires to create awareness of walking to strengthen the planning and investment approach for better pedestrian facilities and policies. Walkable urban and rural settings are safer, more livable and more equitable. You will be informed of the foundational walking policy, decision-making framework and methodology and get a chance to practice application tools and hands-on exercises about “20-Min Neighbourhoods”, “Pedestrian Focused Design”, “Pedestrian Focused Movement & Place” and “Principal Pedestrian Network (PPN)”. This course will benefit you if you work in:

  • road and transport planning
  • road and safety infrastructure and design
  • investment strategy 
  • local government 
  • active transport 
  • Road Safety and Towards Zero
  • traffic management and operations.

Traffic Signals (2 days) 

An introduction to the principles of traffic signal design and operation. By completing this course, you will be able to:

  • prepare concept traffic signal layouts 
  • undertake first-principles analysis of signalised intersections
  • understand the complexities and features within the operational design (Operation Sheets) of signalised intersections, including signal phasing and operational time settings
  • understand how and why the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) is used by Department of Transport to manage the traffic signal network.

Truck Rollover Prevention Program (1 day)

Education for companies on the impact of truck rollover crashes, identification of what causes them and how they can be prevented. This program includes a detailed review of the Codes of Behaviour and implementation of the code in a workplace environment. The training is customised to the client to ensure maximum workplace safety benefit in reducing truck rollovers.
