How to get your Ls
Find out how to get your learner permit in Victoria.
When you get your learner permit, you can drive a car on the road with a supervising driver.
Here's how to get your Learner Permit.
Step 1 - complete the Learner Permit Test Online
The Learner Permit Test Online is an interactive 4-6 hour online course that teaches you about the road rules in Victoria and how to develop safe driving skills. At the end of the course, you'll be given a test of what you have learned. See: Learner Permit Test Online.
Take the Learner Permit Test Online
If you don't have access to a computer or need an interpreter, you can also take the learner permit test in person at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. To do this, you'll need to make an appointment. You will also need to study for the test first. Everything you need to know is in the Road to Solo Driving handbook, which is available to download on the Transport Victoria website. See Learner Permit Test In-Person for more information.
If you are converting your overseas driver licence to a Victorian driver licence, see the Convert your overseas licence page for more information. Depending on what country you come from, you may need to do the Learner Permit Test Online.
Step 2 - complete the application form and organise your documents
After you've completed the Learner Permit Test Online, you must log in to myVicRoads and complete the Learner Permit application form online.
We'll then email you a QR code - make sure you keep this, as you'll need it when you visit us.
Note that if you signed up to do the test before 25 June 2025, you'll need to download a PDF application form. More instructions here.
