Convert a vehicle into a campervan or motorhome

Requirements for converting your vehicle to a campervan or motorhome.

Before performing modifications to your vehicle, it’s recommended that you discuss your plans with a VASS Signatory who will be able to provide you with targeted advice specifically related to your planned modification, to ensure your vehicle will meet the Standards for Registration.

The following standards outline the design and construction requirements for light campervans and motorhomes. 

Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14, Section LH Body and Chassis, Code LH11 Campervan, Motorhome Conversion.

This should be reviewed together with Vehicle Standards Information 5 (VSI5) Conversion of Vehicles to Motor Homes, which outlines additional requirements for light vehicle campervan conversions registered in Victoria.

A VASS Approval Certificate is required to certify the conversion of any light vehicle 4.5 tonne GVM into a campervan or motorhome.

The following standards outline the design and construction requirements for heavy campervans and motorhomes. 

Vehicle Standards Guide 5 (VSG5) provides advice about the heavy vehicle safety standard requirements that will need to be considered when converting a heavy vehicle into a motorhome that will have a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 4.5 tonnes.

This should be reviewed together with Vehicle Standards Information 5 (VSI5) Conversion of Vehicles to Motor Homes, which outlines additional requirements for light vehicle campervan conversions registered in Victoria.

A VASS Approval Letter is required to certify the conversion of any heavy vehicle over 4.5T GVM into a campervan or motorhome.
