Driving in another country

Find out what you need to drive in another country.

International Driving Permits (IDP)

If you have a Victorian driver licence and wish to drive while you are overseas, you may need to apply for an international driving permit.

In Australia, the Government appointed the Australian Automobile Association (AAA) as the only authority to issue permits. In Victoria, the RACV, as a constituent member of the AAA, is authorised to issue IDP's through its RACV shops.

An international driving permit is a translation of a driver licence. It has no validity on its own and must accompany a current driver licence.

International driving permits are not issued to persons under 18 years of age regardless of whether they hold a driver licence. In addition, international driving permits cannot be issued to holders of learner permits.

Get more information about applying for an international driving permit on the RACV (External link) website.

How to get a complete driver licence history report
