Sell a vehicle

What you need to do when you sell a vehicle in Victoria.

When you sell a vehicle privately (not through a dealer) in Victoria, you need to let VicRoads know by submitting a notice of disposal.

You can do this online through myVicRoads with the buyer - or you can download and print a vehicle transfer form, get the buyer to fill in their details and then you can enter the buyer's details into myVicRoads later.

Steps to transfer a vehicle in Victoria

Skip the paperwork and long queues – transferring your vehicle online is the quickest and most convenient way to get it done. Here's how:

Remember: you must complete the transfer within 14 days, or you may be liable for fines, tolls or other fees. And don't forget to cancel any registration direct debits before you transfer.

Note: if your transfer includes an exemption or extra documentation you may have to complete the transfer at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. This includes transfers:

Step 1: Before the sale – get a certificate of roadworthiness (if required)

Before you sell your vehicle, you will need to get a certificate of roadworthiness (if required) from a licensed vehicle tester. The licensed vehicle tester will inspect your vehicle to make sure it is safe to drive on the road.

Once your vehicle passes inspection, you will be issued with a certificate of roadworthiness that will remain current for 30 days. If your vehicle does not pass the first inspection, you will need to get any issues fixed within 14 days.

Step 2: When you sell, complete the vehicle transfer form

You should complete the notice of disposal with the buyer while they are still there. You can do this by finding the vehicle in your myVicRoads account and selecting 'Transfer vehicle'.

You then have two options:

  • Download and print the vehicle transfer form and get the buyer to fill it in. Then you can enter the buyer's details into your myVicRoads account later.
  • Log into myVicRoads and complete the transfer online with the buyer.

The buyer will need to give you:

  • their Victorian driver licence number or their VicRoads customer number
  • their family name (or the ACN if the vehicle is being bought by a company or incorporated association).

You should give the buyer:

  • the certificate of roadworthiness (if required)
  • a receipt. We recommend you provide a receipt to the buyer for your records.  You can use the VicRoads receipt template. The receipt should include:
    • your name and address
    • the buyer's name, address and signature
    • the vehicle's details
    • the date and time of the sale.

Note: if you usually pay your registration renewal by direct debit, don't forget to cancel it before you transfer the vehicle.

Step 3: After the sale – if you used a print transfer form, enter the details online

If you and the buyer used the paper transfer form, you can log into myVicRoads later and enter the details online to complete the transfer. This way, there's no need to visit us.

Once we have received your notice of disposal, you'll get an email within 24 hours to say that the car has been transferred out of your name.
