Displaying P plates
If you are a probationary driver you must display P plates whenever you drive. Failure to display your P plates could result in you being fined and incurring 3 demerit points.
Your P plates must be clearly visible
When driving a motor vehicle
You must not drive a motor vehicle (other than a tractor) unless appropriate P plates are displayed facing out from the front and the rear of the vehicle so that the letter P and the colour of the plate is clearly visible from a distance of 20 metres behind and in front of the vehicle.
When riding a motorcycle
You must not ride a motorcycle unless an appropriate P plate is displayed facing out from the rear of the motorcycle so that the letter P and the colour of the plate is clearly visible from a distance of 20 metres behind the motorcycle.
Size and colour of your P plates
A P plate must be 150mm x 150mm in size and the colours are below.
- P1 probationary drivers P plate is a white letter P on a clear red background
- P2 probationary drivers P plate is a white letter P on a clear green background
Background colour of your P plates
Red P plate
The following pantone colours are within the acceptable range:
- warm Red C
- red 032C
- 185C
- 805C
- 805C2X
- 811C2X
- 811U2X
Green P plate
An acceptable green is pantone colour 356U.
Letters on your P plates
Letters should be simple fonts and not script.
Tinted windows
If you have tinted windows, VicRoads recommends that you should consider using external plates. Depending on how dark the tint is, internal plates may be difficult to see and you could be fined and incur demerit points for not having them clearly visible.
Demister lines
Always take care when attaching objects directly on to rear window demister lines as this may cause damage to the lines. If you are concerned that your plates may affect the demister lines, then VicRoads recommends that you consider using external plates
