Melbourne gears up for VicRoads' exclusive heritage licence plate auction

01 September 2025

On Tuesday 2 September 2025, VicRoads and Heritage Only will shine a spotlight on Victoria's motoring legacy with a live auction of iconic Heritage plates at the Park Hyatt Grand Ballroom in Melbourne.

Motoring enthusiasts, collectors and design lovers will bid on fourteen premium plate combinations, including four, five and six-digit plates. With the in-person auction now at capacity, bidding is still available online, with registration essential.

Each Heritage plate is a handcrafted replica of one of Victoria's original 1930s number plates, made using traditional enamel techniques and issued in the original number series (1 to 285,000). These plates are prestigious and steeped in Victorian motoring history.

Buyers range from car lovers to design aficionados — some match plates to vehicles, others seek a one-of-a-kind piece of history. With only 285,000 combinations ever issued, Heritage plates remain an exclusive part of Victoria’s motoring legacy.

"Heritage plates are the showpiece of Victorian licence plates, and some are worth more than the cars they're attached to," said Giles Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of VicRoads Registration and Licensing Services.

"They're more than just registration numbers — they're a statement of style, authenticity and craftsmanship. Often the lower the number the greater the appeal, but even five or six-digit combinations can be highly sought-after, especially when they feature lucky sequences or elegant symmetry."
