Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a seventeen character alpha/numeric unique identifier number. Trailer manufacturers can apply for a low volume trailer VIN online.
Where to find the VIN
A vehicle's VIN can typically be found on the following:
- stamped on the dashboard near the windscreen (on the driver's side of the vehicle)
- on a plate sticker on the driver's side door jamb
- stamped on the engine firewall
- on your insurance card and insurance policy
- on your vehicle title and registration
All vehicles, except plant, built or sold in Australia since 1 January 1989, are required to have a VIN (Commonwealth Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989).
VIN's must be clearly stamped, embossed or otherwise permanently marked on a substantial part of a vehicle's frame or body.
Each VIN contains a set of encoded details about the vehicle and its origins, and is designed to make the modification and re sale of stolen vehicles more difficult.
If the vehicle is imported and has been issued a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, the VIN must be stamped on vehicle. Refer: Register an imported vehicle.
