Trailer plates

Trailer plates must be displayed on all registered light trailers and light caravans. Trailers that are exempt from registration are required to display the registration number of the towing vehicle.

Check if you need to register your trailer (External link)

1. Using your vehicle's number plate

A trailer that does not have to be registered (exempt from registration) does not have its own number plate. You can use a duplicate of your vehicle's number plate that you buy through VicRoads. This is called an 'exempt trailer plate'.

Log in to purchase

If you don't want to buy a plate, you can paint the number of the towing vehicle on the back of the trailer. If you do this, or something similar, the number must be able to be easily seen from 20 metres away.

You can also choose to register your trailer, even if you don't have to. If you do, it will have its own number plate.

2. Using a trailer's own number plate

A trailer or caravan that needs to be registered must have its own number plate.

When you register your trailer or caravan, you will get a number plate for it.

Rules for number plates on trailers

The number plate of a trailer or caravan must be securely attached. It must be able to be easily seen from 20 metres away.

Fines and demerits

If you drive on a highway without securely fixed number plates that are clearly displayed, you can be fined $385 and lose 3 demerit points.
