Safe Routes to school

DTP (VicRoads) encourages local councils and schools to use a Safe Routes to School (SRTS) approach to improve road safety around pick up and drop off times, create safe walking, cycling and scooting routes to school to encourage active travel.

Successful Safe Routes to School projects:

  • Use a mix of improvements – engineering, education, engagement and enforcement – to improve road safety and increase active travel to school
  • Establish a partnership that is ongoing between the school and local council
  • Work with students and the school community to design and implement locally relevant actions
  • Monitor and evaluate changes in road safety and active travel to school

Watch this presentation

This short video presentation will help you to prepare a Safe Routes to School Community Road Safety application and deliver an effective project. It includes:

  • More about the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) approach
  • Resources to help you design, deliver and evaluate your project
  • Tips for preparing an application

What you may apply for

You may apply for Safe Routes to School funding to work on a complete SRTS project (from issues identification through to implementation and evaluation). You may also apply for funding for specific activities (e.g. analysis, mapping and marking of routes to school) if you can demonstrate project need and benefits.

We strongly encourage you to apply an integrated SRTS approach. It has been demonstrated that a mix of actions – engineering, education, engagement and enforcement – is needed to deliver effective Safe Routes to School outcomes.

Information on what is eligible for Safe Routes to School funding is in the video.
