Secondary school road safety education resources

There are a wide range of road safety education resources and programs available for secondary schools.

We have developed Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Road Safety Units for teachers and practitioners delivering the VCAL in schools and other educational settings. The resource focuses on young driver safety issues and aims to assist young people to enter the road system as safe and responsible drivers.

VCAL practitioners can order one free hard copy of VCAL Road Safety Units by visiting our online bookshop or calling VicRoads on (03) 8391 3255.

The units have been designed and developed to integrate learning outcomes in literacy, numeracy and personal development skills across all levels of VCAL - foundation, intermediate and senior.

Description

CrashStats is a resource that contains all reported road crash injury statistics in Victoria. It can be used by teachers and students as a resource to better understand where and when road crashes occur.

Note that although CrashStats does not include personal information about crashes, individual crash details are presented. Members of the school community that have experienced road trauma, including children, may be reminded of the circumstances and become distressed. Use CrashStats with care, and if any distress is triggered, have a process in place for managing it.

The Fit to Drive (F2D) Workshop for Year 11 students has undergone a comprehensive redevelopment. This is to ensure that the evidence base for the program continues to meet best practice. F2D continues to use a half-day workshop format with peer facilitated small group activities and discussions, together with exploration of a case study conducted by MFB or CFA and a presentation from Victoria Police.

F2D builds on the road safety education resource, Traffic Safety Essentials and RoadSmart program for students at Year 10.

For more information or to make a booking, visit the F2D website (External link).
