About the medical review process
Learn about how and why we do medical reviews.
At VicRoads, we’re responsible for making sure that all drivers are medically fit to drive. We do this by carrying out medical reviews.
The medical review process
If we receive information about a medical condition or disability that could affect your ability to drive safely, we might ask you to participate in the medical review process. This will help us assess your fitness to drive.
We have a legal obligation to investigate any concerns about driving safety under the Road Safety Act 1986.
There are three main stages in the medical review process:
Assessing your fitness to drive
As the Road Safety Authority for Victoria, we need to make sure all licenced drivers are medically fit to drive and have the necessary skills to drive safely. This is for your safety, as well as the safety of everyone else on the road.
We assess your fitness to drive using AustRoads national Assessing Fitness to Drive Standards.
If you don’t provide us with information when we request it, we won’t be able to assess your fitness to drive. If this happens, we’re required by law to suspend your licence until we can make sure you’re able to drive safely.
